Sometimes it’s hard to understand the real strength of the planets in our horoscope to understand their real nature. There are various ways to understand the strength of the planets in your horoscope. If they are placed in a particular way, they will be strong. For eg: If Mars is debilitated but in the 10th house Mars naturally get some strength.
Planetary Strength in Different Directions
- Mercury and Jupiter are powerful in the east. So, even if they are debilitated, but when it is in the east side of the horoscope, they will naturally gain some positivity. In Phaladipika, it is been said that, if Mercury or Jupiter are in lagna, the person will be protected from numerous evils. The east is the rising portion of the horoscope hence it is also considered as lagna.
- The Sun and Mars both gain strength in the south. The South portion is considered as the 10th house, and it is the natural exaltation place for Mars, and 10th house indicates government, and Sun is the indicator of government, so the Sun will naturally gain strength in the 10th house
- Saturn gains strength in the west, as it is the 7th house, which is the natural exaltation house for Saturn.
The Moon and Venus gains strength in the north, which is known as the fourth house
These are known as the dig bala placement of the planets.

- The Moon, Mars, and Saturn are strong in the night
- Mercury is strong despite day or night
- Jupiter, the Sun, and Venus are only strong during the day

During (Krishna Paksha), Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu are strong they are malefics.
- During (Shukla Paksha), Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury are strong, they are benefics

- Malefic planets gain strength during Dakshinayana, when the Sun moves southward (from Cancer to Sagittarius).
- Benefic planets gain strength during Uttarayana, when Sun moves from (from Capricorn to Gemini
